Photographers talk about capturing moments. Kelly Defina also believes in creating them. She sees moments as frames. She believes that, sometimes, the most important thing is what’s left unsaid. Kelly’s love affair with photography is closely intertwined with her love of travel and work in the fashion industry. A way of turning adventures and experiences into lasting keepsakes and into moments that can be drawn upon, dusted off and recreated, she’s taken that world-wise view and used it as the foundation of a career. But just as she brings her own experiences to her work, she also recognises that the best photographs are often those that don’t spell out the answer; instead they invite the viewer to relate to each image with their own experiences and bring their own interpretation to every story.

If life takes a variety of experiences to be whole, so too does its photographic representation. To that end Kelly’s photos can be raw, gritty, awash with emotion – or crafted as flawless illusion. In her work as both an editorial and commercial fashion and beauty photographer, Kelly sees communication with her models as key and is able to draw a unique quality from each subject.
